Beyond the Fences is an adult graphic memoir in progress that speaks to the shared struggles of parents who want to break through cycles of generational trauma to create a better life for their children -- especially those who want to raise compassionate sons in a cruel world of misogyny, violence, and toxic masculinity. Told in a graphic novel style similar to Fun Home by Alison Bechdel, it explores multi-generational family dynamics and mental health. After her oldest brother’s suicide, a mother recounts in letters to her teenage son stories of the family legacy she hopes he will not inherit.
